We visited our local newspaper's printing facilities for their open house this afternoon.
We got to see what all goes into making a single edition of the paper...it's quite a process!
We made newspaper hats.
And got to tour the printing rooms.
Each page of the newspaper is laser printed onto an aluminum plate and then sent to the printer.
The plates can not be re-used. They are, however, sent away to be recycled.
I was really impressed with how many earth friendly practices are being used at our local printers.
Plates ready to be copied onto newsprint.
This is the machine that actually prints the paper.
That is A LOT of paper.
Nater wanted to hop on this machine SO badly!
A big stack of the Sunday comics.
But WAIT...these comics aren't for tomorrow. They are for NEXT WEEK!
They even had the comics for June 15th in another stack.
We felt pretty special to get a sneak peek at our favorite part of the newspaper.
The kids even got their picture in the newspaper(not the greatest picture, but in the paper, nonetheless), and I was quoted in the article about the open house.
It was a pretty neat experience overall...and quite educational!
